special education and social networking

Providing special needs students with another opportunity to express themselves, besides basic communication, is a wonderful idea. There are times when not only special needs students, but all students respond better dealing with technology. This idea that the women in the video came up with showed how the students really got into the activities. The assignments they were working on and creating revealed a lot of happy faces. Allowing students to use their creativity is one of the best ways to keep them engaged, and sometimes finding this activities is the hardest part. Using projects like the ones from this video is a great way to special education students on the right path to social networking.

Also, depending on the student's special need, typing may be more preferable than speaking. If the student has a speech impediment or some sort of hearing/speaking disability, engaging in an activity that allows them to type or watch, levels the playing field for them and allows them the opportunity to feel fully engaged.

I agree with your blog completely! I feel that the special needs student thrive on technology and it does allow them to not only do well but to experience the feeling of mastering the activity. When you stated "that the students really got into the activity and that the assignment revealed a lot of happy faces", I was struck with the same opinion. There is nothing better for a classroom teacher to see than the success of the students and the satisfaction of seeing Special Ed students succeed is even more intense. Great post!
